As a journalist, author, and public speaker (and ASJA member since 1989) my career is dedicated to two interconnected goals.

For readers and audiences, I provide carefully researched and fact-checked information (without bias or political overtones) in ways that will make sense in their daily lives and experience.

For editors and project managers, I provide timely progress reports and details for independent fact-checking, as well as illustration recommendations, all designed to make your project the best it can be. I strive to meet all expectations cheerfully and promptly.

My friendly, conversational style provides readers and audiences with fresh insights into what are often highly complex and technical subjects. I provide fascinating details and real-life examples that people can connect with easily.

In recent years I’ve been focusing my work on natural history subjects, especially the lives of birds. My latest book, Binge Birding: Twenty Days with Binoculars, describes my nearly 4,000-mile solo road trip exploring habitats along the Texas Gulf Coast during spring migration. The book has received critical acclaim in the global birding communnity, and is popular with readers in many countries. I also give in-person and Zoom presentations illustrated with my own photographs about many aspects of bird life. My most popular presentations are “Hummingbirds and Flowers: A Love-Love Relationship” and “Birds on the Move,” an in-depth look at how birds migrate.

In addition to my natural history studies, I am an expert in all aspects of the electric utility industry. My monthly “Future of Electricity” columns (2002-2016) explaining complex enegery concepts to general readers won national awards from the Cooperative Communicators Association for clarity and reader engagement. Frozen State, a book I co-authored with a team assembled by the Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives, earned the “Award of Excellence” from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. I wrote the science portions of the book describing the catastrophic 2009 ice storm and explained the technical details of the recovery efforts.

Presently I am working on a new book about birds in the eastern United States–but I do have time for magazine articles and other assignments. So even though my membership category says “retired” I am still very active as a journalist and speaker. Do please give me a call to discuss how I can help you achieve your project’s goals.
