Sara Murphy

Sara Murphy, PhD is a former academic turned freelance journalist. She has written on personal finance for The New York Times, pet custody for The Washington Post, and haunted history for National Geographic.

She is also a contributing writer at Ambrook Research, an online agricultural publication, where she has written about haunted farm attractions for Halloween, the growing inclusivity on living history farms, today’s FFA (Future Farmers of America), and the women who weave and sometimes grow willow for green burials in the U.S. This last piece was chosen as an editor’s pick from Longreads and was republished in Fast Company.

  • K-pop, which she’s written about for Atlanta Magazine and Eater Atlanta, as well as a personal essay “The Skinship Diaries” in Bangtan Remixed: A BTS Critical Reader (Duke University Press)
  • true crime, including the original Unsolved Mysteries hosted by Robert Stack — a crucible of all the forces shaping American culture in the late 80’s to the early 00’s
  • historical fiction, especially her novel-in-progress, The Ordinaries, set in the priory of Durham Cathedral in northeast England in 1539
