Client Connections 2024 (CC24) — A Virtual Event!

Client Connections (CC), ASJA’s signature event, offers one-on-one meetings with top magazines, newspapers, book agents and marketing agencies; the connections made can lead to long-term successful business relationships. Client Connections 2024 (CC24) — A Virtual Event is set for Sept. 26-27, 2024.

Only professional members can register for CC, a series of nine-minute meetings with editors and agents. Participants pitch story ideas to editors, book proposals with agents and discuss their areas of expertise with content managers. After following up, members often find themselves with new client contacts and new assignments.

Areas of expertise: AARP.org is looking for innovative and engaging content that can help Americans age 50 and older make informed decisions on how to live the healthiest life possible. We cover everything from general health and wellness to medical breakthroughs, to health care policy and delivery. Our online articles offer the reader the “news they can use” to take steps to improve their health.

Are you looking for pitches? I much prefer pitches. I cover the healthy living beat —diet, exercise, disease prevention —as well as vision, dental, hearing and mental health. Additional info: Please do a search of aarp.org as well as a google search (our internal search engine isn’t great) to make sure the idea you are pitching hasn’t been covered. Health articles should include a minimum of two topic experts. We sometimes want to include a “real person” in the story as well, depending on the subject. Every article should be annotated for fact checking purposes, and we require transcripts or detailed interview notes that include direct quotes.

Costco Wholesale: Costco Connection

Are you looking for pitches? I am looking for targeted story pitches during meetings. We are a monthly magazine, and we work a minimum of 3 1/2 months in advance of each issue.

Additional info: Costco Connection magazine runs stories about all things Costco. Since we have an auto buying program and sell tires, batteries, maintenance products and auto accessories, we’re open to wide range of automotive-related topics. Types of projects you typically assign: We’re looking for pitches for 900- to 1,400-word lifestyle stories with a two-week turnaround on assignments. We also have assignments that are guides and points-of-interest (POI) stories, which take longer to report and produce.

Areas of expertise: We are looking for writers who can cover topics including unusual/unique L.A. histories, social media trends, dating/romances/relationships, health and wellness, general trends happening in Los Angeles, L.A. neighborhoods, and hiking and the outdoors. Although we publish traditional reported stories, many of our assignments are guides and points-of-interest stories about L.A.

Are you looking for pitches? I’d prefer to skip full-on pitches during our meetings. I’d much rather hear three possible story ideas. And I’d like to get to know the individual writers and have a clear understanding about what they know about Los Angeles and Southern California.

For a recent project with a tech client, our freelancer settled on a flat rate per story, which included interviews with subject matter experts, writing, and a couple rounds of edits.

Our agency often conducts an audience strategy before bringing in the writer, so when we do onboard someone, we have a pretty precise goal for the content. We give grants to independent journalists reporting on issues related to poverty, economic class, workers’ rights, and income disparity in the U.S., and co-publish their work in partnership with major media outlets.
